Chapter 1: General Characteristics
Your fundamental needs, values, and orientation towards life are symbolized by the four astrological elements. Each person has their own unique balance of these four basic energies: fire (warmth, inspiration, enthusiasm), earth (practicality, realism, material interests), air (social and intellectual qualities), and water (emotional needs and feelings).
Your "elemental make-up" is described below. Remember that most people are "unbalanced" or lopsided, and if you are lacking or deficient in a certain element (or elements), it simply means that you need to consciously develop that aspect of yourself to learn to appreciate and/or to work harder in that dimension of life.
Sometimes we overvalue the element that we are least endowed with, sensing it as a lack within ourselves, but more often we neglect or ignore it. The qualities described below will be reiterated and explained in more detail in the following chapters.
Air and Earth are Strong (F,E,A,W Scores = 13,17,18,1):
You value order and security in your life and prefer dealing with known quantities, following clearly defined guidelines in order to achieve your aims. Reason rather than emotion rules you, and you think in clear, practical, no-nonsense terms. You are uncomfortable with ambiguity, emotional impulsiveness or extremism, and things which cannot be explained in rational terms. Even spiritual or mystical realms, if you have any interest in such things at all, must have either some scientific basis or be proven to you through your own experience and practice.
You think a situation through thoroughly before deciding upon a course of action, assessing and analyzing the matter carefully, and can be relied upon to come to a fair, reasonable, and sensible solution to whatever confronts you.
You are able to handle practical matters very efficiently, using both deductive reasoning ability and manual skill. However, it is easy for you to become overly "adult" and to lose touch with the spontaneous, playful, vibrant, and childlike side of yourself. You can become too organized and controlled, not allowing your emotions or creative, playful impulses full expression, and a certain dryness or emptiness will result. You need to learn to appreciate a certain degree of "creative chaos"!

You have difficulty dealing with your own and others' emotions. Feelings and the emotional reality of a situation are often ignored or discounted by you and you may thus seem insensitive or uncaring to others. Though you may appear emotionally self-sufficient or above it all, your denied feelings can result in physical problems, so it is wise and important for you to learn to acknowledge and express all of your emotions.

Chapter 2: How You Approach Life and How You Appear To Others
The following is a description of your basic stance towards life, the way others see you, the way you come across, the face you show to the world. In Chapter 3 you will read about the "The Inner You: Your Real Motivation", which describes the kind of person you are at heart and where your true priorities lie. Read this chapter and the next one and compare them - there may be significant differences between them, in which case "the inner you" may not shine through and others are in for some surprises when they get to know you at a more than superficial level. This chapter describes the costume you wear, your role in life, while Chapter 3 talks about the real person inside the costume.
Aries Rising:
You meet life head on and throw yourself into new experiences with zest and enthusiasm. You are direct, straightforward, assertive, and usually completely aboveboard in all your dealings. Candid and incapable of guile, insincerity or phoniness, you project a confident and sometimes arrogant appearance to others. You often lack tact and sensitivity, and can be completely oblivious to others' needs, and inadvertently selfish. You are self-reliant and don't depend upon social approval and reinforcement as much as other people do. You like to be original and do not mind going it alone. You may feel that you do not fit into groups very well, and that you do not naturally blend in and cooperate with others very easily. You like to be either a leader or a loner.
You are a doer and thrive on freedom, challenge, and activity. You tend to think in clear, black and white terms, and to be somewhat simplistic in your outlook, which enables you to act in a very decisive and self-assured manner. When inspired with an idea, you feel such a sense of urgency and excitement about it that you will often charge ahead and try to implement it in a rather bold but poorly planned and crudely executed way. Patience and careful attention to details are not your forte. However, you never accept defeat and will have brilliant and unprecedented successes and discoveries, as well as painful failures. To you it is far better to make mistakes than it is to play it safe and never try.
You are scornful of what you see as weakness or passivity in others and also of the human tendency to imitate and follow. You are not a follower. Others see you as a strong individual, and perhaps brash and brazen as well. You present a strong front to the world and generally do not allow others to see your vulnerable or insecure side.

Chapter 3: The Inner You: Your Real Motivation
Ascendant in Aries and Sun in Virgo:
Reading the description of "How you approach life and how you appear to others" in the preceding chapter, one would never guess that behind your direct and self-assured manner lies a great deal of caution and self-doubt. Part of you wants to take risks and charge ahead; the other part is far more careful and sees all the ways your ventures could fail. Also, as mentioned below, precision and meticulous attention to details actually are strong points of yours, though one might be deceived at first by your impetuous manner.
Sun in Virgo:
At heart you are modest and humble, and you rarely strive to be in the limelight or in a position of power. You have a sharp analytical mind, a keen eye for detail, and you prefer to observe, dissect, and study life from a distance. Conscientious and conservative, you can be relied upon to be careful, efficient, and thorough in your work and you take pride in doing a job well. What you may lack in self-confidence you often make up for in skill - developing expertise, technical knowledge, and competency in some specialized area. You are strictly factual, truthful, and scrupulously honest in your self-estimation, and you often do not give yourself enough praise or credit.

There is an ongoing, subtle conflict within you, between your conscious attitudes and aspirations, and your deeper emotional and subconscious beliefs, needs, and feelings. This creates considerable inner stress and sometimes paralyzing indecision, mostly due to the fact that you may be trying to follow a path that is at odds with your subconscious desires. Chronic tightness or tension in your body may well be a signal that you are denying or suppressing the messages from your subconscious or emotional self.
Ideally, you will learn to accept the two quite different aspects of yourself and to express both of them. If you cannot do this, you're apt to attract many people into your life who reflect your denied or repressed qualities, and who seem to make your life difficult. You have big aspirations but do not struggle or labor to achieve them. Your self-confidence and inner harmony attract success and benefits to you in an almost magical way. Your optimism and cheerful generosity also win you many allies and successes in life.
Chapter 4: Mental Interests and Abilities
Mercury in Libra:
One of your greatest assets is your ability to see both sides of an issue, and to negotiate and bring about compromise and reconciliation. Tactful, reasonable, and with considerable social finesse, you work well with people in business as well as in personal relationships. You are objective and somewhat detached from emotional bias, and make an excellent consultant, mediator, or public relations person. You insist upon fairness and seek to bring harmony or at least peaceful coexistence between people, and your diplomacy is a benefit in any business or social situation. You also have fine aesthetic sensitivities and could work in an artistic or cultural environment.

Although you are perceptive and attuned to the personal, human side of any issue (as described above), you are also capable of considerable intellectual detachment and objectivity. You combine the qualities of being subjective and intuitive with a rational, analytical approach. Although broad-minded and interested in the philosophical or long-range implications of any plan (as mentioned earlier), your mind is clear and practical as well. Your wide-ranging ideas and interests are grounded by a sense of realism and order. At times you may seesaw between your optimism and sense of larger possibilities, and your skepticism and need for facts and tangible proof.

You have an aptitude for solving difficult mental problems due to your careful, methodical approach, attention to detail, and tenacity in following a matter through to its conclusion. You have good powers of concentration and enjoy studying and thinking in solitude. You can get wrapped up entirely in your own thoughts and completely engrossed in some small detail. Conservative and something of a skeptic, you may be narrow-minded or closed to any idea which has no concrete proof or scientific verification. Chapter 5: Emotions: Moods, Feelings, Romance
Moon in Aquarius:
You are not easily moved by emotional displays and can be curiously detached from your own and others' emotions. It's almost as if you could turn your feelings on and off at will so you should be careful not to leave the switch "off" too often, for you could easily become too impersonal. Family ties and attachments are not as important to you as they are to most people and you often consider your friends closer to you than your blood relatives. Certainly, your sympathy and concern extends much beyond your immediate family. In your personal relationships, you insist upon a certain amount of independence and the freedom to pursue friendships with as many people, of both sexes, as you choose. You do not appreciate a jealous, possessive partner.
You feel comfortable in an atmosphere that is open and experimental, and you have little taste for convention and tradition.

You get a lot of emotional fulfillment through your involvement in groups, clubs, organizations, community activities, or a network of close friends who support and care for you. You need love, affection, nurturing, and enjoy being pampered - all of which is fine, as long as you are willing to give as well as receive the attention and "babying". There is a rather childish dependency on loved ones which can make you cling to them, or to be very uncomfortable with any conflict which could conceivably lead to separation. Creating a loving family is certainly a challenge for you, one that can be enormously satisfying if you can achieve it - and a source of great sadness if you can not.
Moon Trine Mars:
You are assertive and confront difficulties in a direct, no-nonsense sort of way. You cannot tolerate self-pity or passivity, and you can be rather brusque with others' emotional problems. "Stop crying and DO something about it" might be your motto.

Your childhood and early home life was in many ways unsettling and the nurturing you received was erratic and unreliable at best. You have had to move a lot, or your family may have had some conspicuous differences from other people so that you were often an outsider or "weirdo". You seesaw between being too pushy, confrontational, and insistent on doing things your way, and being too eager to please, without a clear, definite goal of your own. You may feel frustrated at times that you cannot simply do what YOU want to, that you must always accommodate the needs and desires of others. Saturn in Capricorn:
You have a great capacity for self-denial in the pursuit of a long-range goal. You are capable of hard work and persistent labor, but you may lack joyfulness and the ability to play. You often feel burdened by life's demands and responsibilities, and may envy those who seem to attract what they want in life without a great deal of personal effort.
There is a very judgmental, stern, and uncompromising side of yourself which may inhibit you a great deal. You must avoid becoming heavy and cynical, or becoming a rather callous, sophisticated adult whose practicality and realism squeeze out the playful, imaginative side of life.
Saturn in 10th house:
You are very conscientious, responsible, and concerned with your duty, your public image and reputation, and becoming a person of stature in the world. You understand the need for hard work and careful planning in order to accomplish anything substantial and you're capable of much self-discipline and patience once you set your sights on a goal.
